The Charleston Air Force Base is located in North Charleston, South Carolina, and has a rich history that dates back to World War II. In 1941, the US government acquired the land to construct a military base that would support the war effort.
Initially, the base was used as an Army Air Corps facility, and it served as a training center for B-25 bomber crews. After the war, the base was deactivated, but it was reactivated in 1951 as a Strategic Air Command base. During the Cold War, the Charleston Air Force Base played a critical role in the defense of the United States.
In the 1960s, the base became the primary maintenance and logistics center for the C-141 Starlifter, a transport aircraft used by the US Air Force. The base also played a key role in the evacuation of American citizens from Saigon during the Vietnam War.
In the 1990s, the Charleston Air Force Base played a major role in supporting US operations in the Persian Gulf, including the Gulf War and the Iraq War. The base was also instrumental in the relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016.
Today, the Charleston Air Force Base is home to the 628th Air Base Wing and the 437th Airlift Wing, which operates the C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft. The base continues to support US military operations around the world and is an important part of the Charleston community.
